While Square Enix isn’t done remaking Final Fantasy 7 yet, the latest rumor has surfaced that the company has two more Final Fantasy games being remade.
Before reading further, remember that this is a rumor, though one coming from a credible source, hence why it bears reporting.
The news comes from reliable leaker NateTheHate, who has leaked a bunch of news items that turned out to be the real deal (the most recent is the leak that there would be a new State of Play by Sony that turned out to be true).
According to NateTheHate, Square Enix is developing Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics, though neither is set to be released soon.
Replying to a user on X, NateTheHate mentioned we might see it launch in 2026.
Again, both titles have not been officially announced, though a Final Fantasy 9 remake was mentioned in the 2021 GeForce Now database leak, with most of the games mentioned there having been announced or released.
Final Fantasy 9 was released in 2000 on the PS1, and was met with positive reception. It was seen as a throwback to the older Final Fantasy games, and was the last game in the series whose music was composed by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu.
Final Fantasy Tactics, the first tactical RPG from the franchise, was released in 1997 and also on the PS1. Its director, Yasumi Matsuno, created the Ogre Battle series. FF Tactics has since become a cult classic. It was the first game to introduce the world of Ivalice in the Final Fantasy universe, which would be used again in Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy 12.
Possibly my favorite Final Fantasy game of the PS1 era was Final Fantasy 9, and I’m hoping a remake gets announced soon. Hopefully, it won’t be split into three parts, and won’t take as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy to be made.
Both remain in active development. FFIXR isn’t expected to see release in 2025. Maybe we’ll see it launch in 2026.
