Two weeks ahead of its anticipated launch, South of Midnight revealed how much storage space players will need to install the game during its ongoing preload window. South of Midnight will require downloading 42.50 GB of data on Xbox Series X/S consoles, while PC players must set aside at least 61 GB of space.
Created by the developers of We Happy Few and Contrast, South of Midnight is a folklore-inspired adventure through the American Deep South. Players assume the role of Hazel, who is sent into a bizarre world following a storm that tore through her hometown of Prospero. As she searches for her missing mother Lacy, Hazel becomes a Weaver, a magician who has the power to mend spirits and unmake dangerous foes called Haints that lurk at every turn. With a stop-motion-esque animation style, and colorful environments that define the Gothic South, the latest project from Compulsion Games is one of Microsoft’s more whimsical titles to date
As fans wait for South of Midnight to arrive, Microsoft has shared a crucial detail about the game that players must note. As reported by XboxEra, South of Midnight is now available for preloading on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs via the Xbox app. Depending on the system that players choose, South of Midnight will have different file sizes for each client. The Xbox Series X/S version will download 42.50 GB of compressed data, but the file size will grow to 58 GB once unpacked.

Preloading is now available on PC and Xbox.
On the Xbox app for PC, South of Midnight’s download size is slightly bigger, at 61.1 GB. However, no additional unpacking happens on the PC version. The preload for South of Midnight started two weeks before its April 8 release date. However, fans who pre-order South of Midnight: Premium Edition will get to play on April 3, five days ahead of the full launch.
The standard edition of South of Midnight is currently priced at $39.99, while the Premium Edition will add another $10. South of Midnight is also a Day One Xbox Game Pass title on PC and consoles. To celebrate South of Midnight going gold, Compulsion Games launched the game’s soundtrack on streaming platforms like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Spotify. The composer of South of Midnight’s soundtrack is Olivier Deriviere, whose previous works include A Plague Tale: Requiem and Dying Light 2: Stay Human.
Between the folklore influences and the Unreal Engine 5 graphics, South of Midnight is one of 2025’s most anticipated titles. Only time will tell how successful the game will be.
