Maintaining your bike’s chain properly can make a significant difference in your riding experience
A chain is one of the most important parts of a motorcycle’s powertrain that connects the rear wheel to the engine. Keeping the chain clean is necessary for optimal performance and to prevent the loss of power being transmitted.
A well maintained chain ensures smooth performance, extended lifespan and prevents untimely wear of the chain and sprockets. It also reduces friction produced during operation and improves fuel efficiency.
What do you need to maintain your chain?
The basic products you would need to clean and lube your chain
-
A dedicated chain cleaner should be used to clean the dirt and debris. If the chain cleaner is not available, WD-40 will do the job. The basic idea behind it is to get rid of the muck and previous lube that builds up overtime.
-
Chain cleaning brush to scrub the chain. If the brush is not available you can use an old toothbrush too.
-
A good chain lube to apply on the chain post the cleaning process. A good chain lube can make a difference in your bike’s functioning and smoothness.
Here’s a detailed procedure on how to clean and lube your bike’s chain:
-
Mount the bike on the centre-stand. If your bike doesn’t come with a centre-stand then it’s a two-man job. If you don’t have anyone to help you, it’s better to get a paddock stand to mount your bike.
-
Wash the chain to remove the muck and spray the chain cleaner on the chain inside out.
-
Use the cleaning brush to clean the chain thoroughly for any accumulated dirt.
-
After the cleaning is done, spray a thin layer of the lube on the chain while rotating the rear wheel and never lube the chain with the engine running as you could hurt yourself.
-
After the lubing is done, wipe off the lube from the brakes or the tyres if there is any as a safety precaution.
-
The lube can make the tyres slippery and the brakes to fail if ridden with lube on them.
Some Tips To Prolong You Chain’s Life
-
Ideally, the chain should be cleaned and lubed every 500-700km
-
Should be lubed before and after long rides
-
Check if the chain is loose and get it tightened from the authorised service centre or your mechanic
-
Inspect your chain regularly for rust, debris and dirt that accumulates over time.
