We may one day see StarCraft 3, but the current rumblings in the undergrowth have yet to materialize in any tangible way. What we have had instead are several spiritual successors aiming to fill that gap in our hearts, and among them Stormgate has some of the most established credentials. Many of the team at developer Frost Giant are former Blizzard employees who worked on the likes of Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo. After a shaky launch, the new RTS is now starting to seriously take shape, and we’ve got ten copies of its ultimate $60 edition to give away if you want to see how far it’s come.
The early showings of Stormgate’s core systems looked promising, yet it’s taken a while for the RTS game to truly find its feet. Launched into early access perhaps a little too soon (at Frost Giant’s own admission), it was met with a mixed reception. Just last month, however, the studio launched its big campaign redesign, featuring fresh storylines, cutscenes, mission design, and unit tech trees, and the signs are looking good. Steam reviews from the past 30 days have shot up into the ‘mostly positive’ range, and more is coming.
At the heart of Stormgate are its three factions. The Human Vanguard, Infernal Host, and Celestial Armada are easily likened to Starcraft’s Terran, Zerg, and Protoss, but Frost Giant’s implementation feels quite different. The Celestials in particular are one of the most unique RTS factions I’ve encountered in any game, with the ability to warp in units directly onto the battlefield, allowing them to respond to any situation.
With its major overhaul out now, it’s a perfect time to jump in and give Stormgate a try, and we’re giving away the opportunity to do so with the full set of bells and whistles.
