It hasn’t been smooth sailing for Civilization 7 since its launch.
While I enjoyed the game and still play it often, fans are divided on the latest entry in the legendary 4X strategy series. The game still has a “mixed” rating based on Steam user reviews.
Updates and patches are already in the works, but the same is dead for DLC releases, including introducing new leaders and civs to the game.
We already have a roadmap planned for Civ 7’s DLC, which rubbed some people the wrong way, but it is what it is.
Per the roadmap, the first batch of DLC releases, Crossroads of the World, will be released in two waves this month. The first will feature Ada Lovelace as a leader, four new natural wonders, and two civs: Carthage and Great Britain. The second release brings Simon Bolivar as a leader and the civs Bulgaria and Nepal. Thanks to some sluething from Reddit user JordiTK and Civilization Discord user Supernova47x, we may now when they will release.
According to leaks on the Nintendo Store, Crossroads of the World will be released on March 4th and 25th and cost $29.99.
The fact that Firaxis is releasing DLC updates a month after release that include leaders and civs that have already ruffled the feathers of their fans, especially since one of those civs is Great Britain, as well as an English leader in Ada Lovelace.
Some see it as frustrating when you factor in the asking price of $29.99.
Reddit user Scottybadotty pointed out the price increases for DLC releases over the years, going back to Civilization V to compare. They mention that Civ 5’s Polynesia pack, which included a leader and a civ, was just under $4 on release. Adjusted for inflation, that’s essentially $5. The game also had the Spain and Inca double DLC pack which released at comparable pricing.
As for Civ 6, its single and double civ DLC releases were roughly $5 and $9, respectively. Adjusted for inflation, it’s still an incredibly reasonable price.
Now, we come to the present day, and $29.99 gets you four civs, two leaders, and four natural wonders On paper, it seems like it’s more, but with Civ 7’s change to how leaders and civs work, people aren’t happy and are already review bombing the DLC pack due to being upset at having to pay $30 for such a small amount of content, nevermind the fact that we’re getting DLC when the base game is in the state it’s in.
