Showrunner and executive producer Jonathan Tropper has been signed to his third exclusive deal with Apple TV+, following the success of his latest Jon Hamm drama.
Tropper is currently writing a forthcoming “Star Wars” movie, but was previously the showrunner on “See,” which he joined in 2019, and then had his Apple TV+ deal renewed in 2022. According to industry publication Deadline, Tropper has now signed his third consecutive and exclusive deal with Apple TV+ for television projects.
“See,” created and written by Steven Knight, concluded in 2022. Since then, most of Tropper’s Apple TV+ work has been on projects that have yet to start streaming, such as the limited series called “Lucky,” based on Marissa Stapley’s novel.
“Working with the entire team at Apple continues to be the single most creatively fulfilling collaboration of my career,” said Tropper, “and I’m looking forward to bringing Lucky and other new projects to the platform, while making more seasons of ‘Your Friends and Neighbors.'”
Tropper’s other new projects include the action/comedy “Matchbox,” which he is writing, and is inspired by the toy company. He’s also writing a science fiction mystery film called “The Corsair Code,” which is based on his own short story.
“Ever since the groundbreaking ‘See,’ it has been a thrill to collaborate with Jonathan,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming, Apple TV+, “and we couldn’t be happier to continue this partnership with so many fantastic projects coming soon to Apple TV+.”
It’s the currently streaming “Your Friends and Neighbors” which may have decided Apple TV+ on renewing his deal. The drama, created by Tropper and with three of its nine episodes written by him, is said to be the streamer’s most-watched new drama.
“From the moment we heard Jonathan Tropper’s brilliantly entertaining and witty pitch for ‘Your Friends and Neighbors,’ we were enthralled, and it has been so rewarding to watch as global audiences have become addicted to the series in record numbers,” Cherniss added. “To witness the charismatic Jon Hamm and the rest of this ensemble cast bring these beautifully crafted characters to life in a show that is both wildly enjoyable and deeply resonant has been an absolute pleasure.”
“Your Friends and Neighbors” began streaming on Apple TV+ on April 11, 2025. It will conclude its first season on May 30, 2025, but Apple TV+ ordered a second run as far back as November 2024.
Separately, “Severance” executive producer Ben Stiller recently confirmed that he is developing potential spin-offs from the dark Apple TV+ drama.
