Yamaha To Launch New River Indie Based Electric Scooter In India | BikeDekho TechTricks365

The upcoming scooter would get the same powertrain as the River Indie

Quick News Highlights

  • Yamaha India is partnering up with River Indie

  • Will be launching their first electric scooter in India by 2026-27

  • The scooter will feature a completely different design and styling

Yamaha India has partnered with River Indie to launch a new electric scooter in India. The project, codenamed RY01, will be a commuter-focused electric scooter based on the River Indie. The upcoming scooter will feature the same powertrain and battery management system (BMS).

As part of this partnership, Yamaha and River will co-develop the upcoming Yamaha electric scooter. Under this partnership, Yamaha will have full project ownership, and their engineering teams in Japan, the USA, and Europe will help develop the scooter. River will manage manufacturing, R&D, and motor and battery integration. The upcoming Yamaha electric scooter will be a bit different from the River Indie. It could feature a sporty design language, in contrast to the utility-focused one which we have seen on the River Indie.

The upcoming scooter could be powered by a 6.7kW motor mated to a 4kWh battery pack — similar to the one we have seen on the River Indie. The motor offers a top speed of 90kmph, which is quite decent and more than enough to keep up with city and highway traffic. The 4kWh battery pack on the River Indie offers a claimed range of 161km, which is quite impressive.

Currently, a lot of large manufacturers in India have entered the electric vehicle space. Japanese manufacturers like Honda and Suzuki have already entered the space, with Honda launching the Activa e; and QC1. Suzuki India had unveiled the e-Access at Bharat Mobility Expo. Yamaha was the only one remaining.

With the upcoming project RY01, Yamaha could be targeting the performance electric scooter segment, which is currently dominated by Ola Electric and Ather Energy. This segment also makes more sense for the brand, as Yamaha has built its reputation with affordable performance offerings over the years. The upcoming electric scooter is set to go into production somewhere between July to September 2025. So we can expect the scooter to be launched in India by 2026 to 2027.
