Xbox consoles, well-known for their versatility as both a gaming and entertainment system, are facing a new issue impacting its media functionality. Many users spend hours watching content through various TV apps on the platform, so smooth performance is critical. However, Xbox has confirmed that it is currently investigating a problem that causes some apps to become laggy or sluggish after extended periods of playback.
Issues have persisted ever since October 8, when Xbox consoles received a significant update designed to improve how quickly and consistently Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S systems detect new game updates. This enhancement aimed to streamline the gaming experience by ensuring players had access to the latest game versions without unnecessary delays. The update was first made available to members of the Xbox Insiders program, which provided early access to new features and preview versions of operating system builds. Updates like these are initially rolled out to the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring of Insiders, who test the updates and provide feedback on potential issues. This phased approach allows Xbox to refine updates before releasing them to all users.
While the recent issue appears to be limited to a small number of users, reports of the problem have surfaced online. According to a statement shared with Alpha Xbox Insiders last week, the Xbox team is aware of the issue and is actively working to resolve it. “We are investigating a small number of reports with some media apps becoming laggy or sluggish after extended playback,” the company wrote in a statement, adding that a possible workaround could be switching to a game then back to the media app or quitting and relaunching the app will resolve the behavior.
This issue is distinct from general Xbox app lag, which can result from a poor internet connection, an overloaded network, outdated firmware, background applications running, an overheating console, incorrect in-game settings, or failing to meet a game’s recommended system requirements. Instead, it specifically affects apps after prolonged use, leading to performance degradation. For now, users experiencing this problem are advised to use the suggested workaround of restarting the affected app or temporarily switching to a game and returning to the app. Xbox remains committed to addressing these issues and ensuring a seamless experience for its users, both in gaming and media consumption. Further updates on the media app lag issue are expected as the investigation progresses.
The investigation comes amidst other recent concerns for Xbox users. Just weeks ago, several players reported that certain indie games mysteriously disappeared from their Xbox libraries without warning. At least five titles were initially affected, though some were able to restore them relatively quickly after developers were made aware of the situation.
