Digital Universes Beyond sets are coming to Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic Online. Wizards of the Coast has announced a new set called Through the Omenpaths, which will bring certain crossovers to the digital spin-offs of the popular card game.
Through the Omenpaths Announcement
In an official blog post, Wizards of the Coast’s own Blake Rasmussen explains Through the Omenpaths was created to answer a persistent question by the Magic: The Gathering community: “Will this Univeres Beyond set be available digitally?” This is important since the answer to this question has been inconsistent.
Simply put, Through the Omenpaths will introduce Universes Within versions of certain crossover sets. This means cards that are mechanically similar, but represented with different artwork, names, and creative treatments.
This doesn’t mean that every Univeres Beyond set will be getting the Through the Omenpaths treatment. The only sets coming are for full sets that are legal in play formats. Also, if the Universes Beyond set is already available digitally, it will not show up here.
Lastly, if you were interested in seeing how Through the Omenpaths will interpret the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man set, you will be disappointed. Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Spider-Man and all future Marvel crossover sets will not be coming digitally.
The announcement addresses an issue regarding parity between the digital and physical versions of Magic. Starting this year, WOTC confirmed that all Universes Beyond sets will be legal in all play formats. If all cards in these sets aren’t available in Magic Arena or Online, that would mean a very different play environment and meta.
The first two upcoming Magic crossover sets coming via Through The Omenpaths, Final Fantasy, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, will be available September 23.
