The deadline for fitment of HSRPs has been extended till June 30, 2025
The Maharashtra Transport Department had mandated that all two-wheelers sold after April 2019 must have HSRPs. In February 2025, a notification regarding fitment of HSRPs (High Security Registration Plates) for all two-wheelers registered before April, 2019 was published. If you own a bike registered prior to this and isn’t fitted with HSRPs yet, it’s of utmost priority to get it done to avoid any fines and legal troubles.
What HSRPs (High Security Registration Plates) are?
The HSRP (High Security Registration Plates) are number plates etched with a 10-digit number and a code specific to the two-wheeler it is fitted to. These special number plates are fitted with tamper-proof snap locks and cannot be mounted on the bike again if the locks are broken. The plates are made from an aluminium alloy and are imprinted with a retro reflective film too. For the BS6 two-wheelers, these plates come with a colour coded sticker indicating their fuel type.
Why Do We Need HSRPs?
HSRP (High Security Registration Plates) are meant to reduce vehicle theft, making the plates harder to forge and fake number plates easier to detect. Additionally, they are also responsible for creating a uniform standard for number plates across the country. You can be fined for not having an HSRPs or investigated as it indicates a possible theft.
