“Sunderfolk,” a new couch co-op game, has arrived for multiple platforms. While it doesn’t run on Mac, it does require players to use iPads or iPhones as a controller for game night.

The developers over at Secret Door are looking to redefine game night with Sunderfolk, a turn-based, tactical RPG. What sets it apart from others in its class is that it’s a couch co-op game that incorporates your smartphone into the experience.

To play, players will need an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet. Then, they’ll scan a QR code and use the Sunderfolk app to interface with the game.

Your device acts as a controller, hand of cards, rule book, inventory, and more. The game supports a maximum of four players, each controlling one of six unique characters based on traditional RPG classes.

The classes include Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger, or Rogue, each with a different style of play. Furthermore, like most adventure games, players can tailor the characters using skill cards, trinkets, and weapons.

The game’s storyline starts in Arden, a village that grew around the remnant of a magical substance known as brightstone. Unfortunately for Arden, outside forces have begun to threaten its very existence.

Each player takes their turn one at a time by choosing one of their Skill Cards to determine their character’s actions. Players will need to work together to adapt their strategy as they progress through the game.

While the Sunderfolk Controller app is free to download, the required Sunderfolk game costs $49.99 on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.

The store page makes a note that a host can launch the game and have three players join remotely for free.
