Sony CEO Says PS5 Finally Has More Players Than PS4 TechTricks365

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 has finally beaten the PS4 in monthly player numbers, with its current console taking five years to outstrip its predecessor in engagement.

The PS4 is one of the best-selling video game consoles of all time, shipping over 100 million units. This makes it the fifth best-selling system, and Sony’s second best overall, with the PS2 still being the top-ranked overall. The PS5 has yet to hit those highs, and is unlikely to, but it has still sold an impressive 70+ million units to date.

The PS5 is catching up to its predecessor in terms of engagement. According to Video Games Chronicle, Sony has reported that the PS5 has surpassed the PS4 in terms of monthly active users, with the new system accounting for over half of the 124 million players.

It’s no surprise that players have gradually shifted to the PS5. If anything, it took longer than anticipated, due to how much of a pain it was to buy a system during its first two years.

The PS5 library has gradually grown with some amazing exclusives, as well as titles that just can’t function on the PS4, so those who want to play the newest games need to have made the jump at some point.

That being said, it doesn’t appear that the PS4 is slowing down anytime soon, as it’s still pulling in amazing active player numbers. There are plenty of popular games that can still run on the old hardware, so it’s not as if everyone has an incentive to make the jump.

The question now is whether the PS5 will be able to completely overtake the PS4 in sales? The fact that the PS5 has been out for five years now suggests that it’s not going to do that, especially with the price increases, but will still have a respectable and profitable run. It will then fall to the PS6 to be next in line to try and overtake the PS2 in sales.
