Royal Enfield Scram 440 Bookings, Deliveries And Sales Paused Due To An Engine Problem | BikeDekho TechTricks365

The sales halt is temporary until the issue is rectified

Quick News Highlights

  • Royal Enfield pauses sales and bookings of the Scram 440

  • This is because of an engine start issue

  • Bookings and sales will be restarted by June 2025 once replacements are done

Royal Enfield has paused selling and accepting bookings for the Scram 440 motorcycle model temporarily – because of an issue with its engine. The issue was found in a limited quantity of motorcycles, and is about a defective part called the ‘Woodruff key’ that is a part of the engine, related to the electric starter motor.

What Exactly Is The Issue?

The affected bikes have a defect that makes it hard for them to start up again especially after some amount of usage. Although the engine does not stall while riding, it will fail to re-start when the rider tries to turn on the engine after riding some distance. According to reports, only about 2% of the Scram 440s sold so far have been affected by this problem. To rectify the issue, Royal Enfield has already begun shipping replacement parts to dealerships, where they will be fitted on the units that have been identified with this issue.

What Is A Woodruff Key?

A Woodruff key is a small, semi-circle shaped piece of metal used to connect a shaft and a gear or pulley – so they can rotate together. It’s like a tiny lock that keeps these parts in place and so they can turn together at the same time. In case of the Royal Enfield Scram 440, the key fits within the magneto (a part that generates electrical power from the engine). If the key does not  fit properly or gets damaged, it can cause the engine to have trouble starting after it has been turned off. It is a small but crucial component for making sure the engine’s electrical system works correctly.

Royal Enfield’s Approach

Even though the number of units impacted are relatively small, Royal Enfield is being proactive by sorting out the issue on priority. In fact, our dealer sources have revealed that the bookings are not currently accepted and the recent bookings were also being cancelled (for the time being) until the issue is resolved. While Royal Enfield has not made an official announcement to the public yet, sources say the sales, bookings and deliveries will resume some time by June 2025.
