Rumors about Ubisoft being sold have surfaced repeatedly, especially after the French company reported disappointing financial results in recent times. Ubisoft has acknowledged that being acquired by another company is a possibility, although they are currently evaluating different strategies.
According to Bloomberg (paywalled), Tencent and the Guillemot family, the founders of Ubisoft, are now thinking about creating a new company that would include some of Ubisoft’s assets. The idea is to increase the value of the French gaming company.
Both Tencent and the Guillemot family are reportedly evaluating which assets could be included in the proposed venture. If the plan moves forward, Tencent would increase its stake in Ubisoft and gain more control over some of its intellectual properties (IPs). Meanwhile, the Guillemot family could use this as an opportunity to regain full control of the company.
Despite the discussions, no final decision has been made yet. Ubisoft stated on January 9 that they have appointed advisors to identify the best strategies to grow the company.
However, the need for such strategies has become increasingly urgent, as Ubisoft’s struggles extend beyond financial performance. The company’s highly anticipated game Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed twice, raising concerns about its development. Additionally, other major projects like Star Wars Outlaws failed to meet sales expectations, delivering softer-than-expected results.
Adding to the challenges, reports claim that Ubisoft might be using bots to promote Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This shows how the company is trying hard to fix its image and improve its sales.
Given these challenges, Tencent and the Guillemot family seem to be working together to help steady the company and keep it strong. However, whether this plan works will mostly depend on how well Assassin’s Creed Shadows does, as it’s a very important release for Ubisoft’s future.
