I think I speak for most people when I say that we’re done with multiplayer shooters. 2024 saw the rise and fall of supposed behemoths like Concord and XDefiant, and while 2025 has seen newcomers like Fragpunk make a decent dent, the interest in FPS games seems to be at an all-time low. Enter FBC Firebreak, a bizarre new co-op shooter from Alan Wake and Max Payne developer Remedy Entertainment. Set in the chaotic world of Control, it’s certainly the most interesting take on the genre that I’ve seen in quite some time, and now it has a release date.
On paper, FBC Firebreak looks like any other co-op FPS game. You embark on various 3-player PvE missions, dubbed ‘Jobs,’ defeat monsters, upgrade your gear, and do it all again. Channeling the chaos of games like Helldivers 2 and Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2, on paper Firebreak sounds like just another entry in an already overcrowded genre.
But this is Remedy, and this is The Oldest House. The creatures you’ll be fighting aren’t your run-of-the-mill monsters; they’re the terrors we’ve experienced in Control, the developer’s stellar action-adventure game. You’ll have to fend off your foes while battling the elements, which sporadically affect the outcome of your Jobs and consistently throw wrenches into even the best-laid plans.
Each Job is split across three different zones, which you’ll need to clear room by room. We see our trio face off against a monster that’s apparently made of sticky notes, with the pesky little yellow papers sticking to your visor and obscuring your vision as you progress through its thoroughly beige lair. You could argue that it’s nature fighting back over deforestation, or you could argue that it’s absolute lunacy: I’ll let you choose which.
You won’t be using the standard weapons arsenal, either. A zany world requires imaginative, if not slightly bizarre, equipment, with the trailer above showcasing everything from what looks to be a goo gun to more standard weaponry. In short: there’s a lot going on, and while I’ve seen my fair share of extra-terrestrial bugs across Helldivers and Space Marine, I’ve never seen anything quite like this.
Remedy has confirmed that FBC Firebreak launches on Tuesday June 17, retailing for $49.99 / £39.99 for the base game and $59.99 / £46.99 for the deluxe edition. Note that the game does not have a battle pass system or any auxiliary purchases; instead, the Requisition system allows you to accrue swathes of in-game cash to drop on cosmetics instead, just like Helldivers.
