One of the best single-player FPS games ever is free to keep, if you’re fast TechTricks365

A free-to-keep PC game is always worth getting hyped about, but when it’s an atmospheric, must-play FPS game, my excitement levels go up to a different level. Sharing a similar tone and survival-based focus to the Stalker series, the Metro franchise has produced some sensational shooters, and now the remastered version of the game that started it all, Metro 2033 Redux, is being given away for free.

While I fully appreciate that your library is probably groaning with unplayed games already, you can never pass up on a freebie – especially when it’s this good. First released in 2010, Metro 2033 is a post-apocalyptic, survival horror-inspired FPS game full of grit, beautifully gloomy aesthetics, and unexpected moments. This single-player shooter’s story takes place in Moscow in the aftermath of a nuclear war where people now live in the disused metro tunnels beneath the city. You’ll explore these tunnels, and venture above ground too, navigating a world full of hostile factions and vicious mutants. Metro 2033 Redux is the fully remastered version, which also comes with some of the gameplay innovations and features found in the second game in the series, Metro Last Light.

As you see in the Metro series’ close cousin, Stalker, the gunplay demands trigger discipline and accuracy, because ammo is scarce. This is one of the more survival game-leaning aspects of Metro 2033, alongside having to wear a gas mask to explore irradiated areas and change your air filter.

To give you a sense at just how good an FPS 2033 is, the Redux version boasts a user score on Steam of 90%, plus it holds a 90 average review score on Metacritic too. While the Stalker series is often hailed as the king of the dark survival shooter scene, Metro is a more than worthy challenger to that title.

Metro 2033 Redux is a brilliant single-player shooter, even after all these years, and you can add it to your Steam, GOG, or Xbox library for free until Wednesday, April 16 at 9am PDT / 12pm EDT/ 5pm BST / 6pm CEST.
