It’s hard enough to keep a videogame character alive on Earth. In games like Sons of the Forest or The Long Dark, avoiding danger and withstanding the elements is a difficult task to be overcome. Horizon Journey is a new game that wants to add even more desperation to the genre, taking note from the space exploration of No Man’s Sky or Starfield while leaning into the perils of trying to survive and create a new life in the inhospitable environment of Mars. It’s also just announced an Early Access launch date that’s coming up very soon.
Horizon Journey is a survival game that takes place in 2053 and casts players as members of a mission to terraform Mars. It’s meant to be a fairly realistic take on the challenges of surviving a new Martian life, requiring not just outpost building and exploration but also the management of oxygen and food supplies on a planet wracked by radiation, storms, and extreme temperature changes.
Playable either alone or with others in co-op, Horizon Journey sees explorers setting out across Mars to gather necessary resources from the environment—and from the sites of previous exploratory missions—and use them to build up a new colony capable of sustaining human life. The game’s main base is fully customizable, but players can also use their resources to craft the items needed to support and expand their settlement.
If this sounds interesting, you won’t have to wait long to give the game a try for yourself. Horizon Journey launches in Early Access on Steam on Friday June 27, 2025. Wishlist it or find more details right here.
