A wildly unexpected mash-up of the distant past and the modern or near-future world is always going to garner attention in videogames. The dinosaur-filled streets of Exoprimal, for example, or the whiplash between historical settings and science fiction laboratories in the earlier Assassin’s Creed games, immediately turns heads. This sort of discordance is even more compelling in Kingmakers, which has helped create huge anticipation for its combination of medieval and modern warfare, along with a hybrid of strategy and shooter design. Now, after months of waiting, we finally have a Kingmakers release date, and it’s not far off.
It’s hard to classify exactly what kind of game Kingmakers is, not just because of its bizarre aesthetic mishmash but also due to the way it combines both third-person action with strategy game settlement building.
The bulk of the game sees players, either alone or in online co-op, assume the role of a modern soldier who’s been sent back in time to save the future by taking part in a medieval English war. Though they have to fight armored knights and assault castles, the player can use automatic rifles and rocket launchers, smash through enemy ranks in a tank or ride around the battlefield on a motorbike. The strategy layer comes from a system that allows players to switch from on-the-ground fighting and a more removed viewpoint where their units can be given orders and forts can be built.
This mix of genres and settings is likely a large part of why so many players want to check the project out for themselves. At the time of writing, Kingmakers is the most wishlisted game tagged ‘Strategy’ on Steam and the 15th most wishlisted game overall. Fortunately, it won’t be long until the game’s available for everyone to try.
