This Labour Day, we celebrate the silent heroes
Labour Day is observed on May 1st in India to celebrate the workers, labourers, and all the hardworking men and women that helped develop and build our country. Behind every worker’s success are a few tools that are an unfailing source of strength, making their dreams come true. Among these, a few two-wheelers stand out for their role in connecting people to opportunities, nurturing their families, and helping India grow. These five two-wheelers: the Hero Splendor Plus, Honda Activa, Honda Shine 125, Bajaj Platina 100, and the TVS XL 100, have been more than machines – they have been steadfast companions, silently working behind the scenes in India’s development.
Hero Splendor
The Hero Splendor has been the lifeline of common India for decades. It is reliable, has a high mileage, and maintenance costs are low. Due this, it emerged as the first choice for lakhs of Indians — teachers and farmers, shopkeepers and small business owners. It enabled people to travel for jobs, to new cities, and earn more. In villages and towns all over the nation, the Splendor became the symbol of hard work.
Honda Activa
The Honda Activa revolutionized the way India got around town. Scooters had been considered old-fashioned before the Activa’s introduction – and it brought ease of riding with its variomatic transmission. It was easy to ride for anyone — first time riders, the youth, elderly citizens, and most importantly: women. For these women, the Activa was the beginning of a sense of freedom that only two-wheels can offer. It was an instant hit with family buyers, delivery personnel and small business owners in cities. Its impact was immense, as commuting daily and earning a livelihood became easier for most.
Honda Shine 125
The Honda Shine provided the ideal combination of power and mileage. It was and still is very much in demand in small villages and towns where individuals cover longer distances. With its smooth engine and robust build – it enabled farmers, agricultural workers, and small business owners to go to new destinations and customers. Shine 125 facilitated a significant boost to incomes and enabled workers to expand businesses in rural and urban India.
Bajaj Platina 100
The Bajaj Platina 100 became a hit for having the best mileage in its class and also while at it, the cheapest to buy as well. For daily commuters, mileage is the most important thing – especially when riding a lot of kilometres daily. The Platina 100 has helped daily wage workers, delivery riders, and farm workers to commute freely while keeping their daily fuel costs low.
TVS XL 100
The TVS XL 100 is different from everything on this list as it is a moped. However, it became something more than just a means of transport. In rural India, in most places, it has become the farmer’s, vendor’s, and small shopkeeper’s mini-truck. With the capability to carry heavy loads, the XL 100 has been invaluable in the transportation of vegetables, grains, commodities, water, and more. It has given people the opportunity to earn more and reach more markets, where other two-wheelers could not reach easily. Its impact on rural economies has been monumental.
BikeDekho Says
This Labour Day, as we pay tribute to the working class who built India, it’s also essential to remember the machines that helped them along the way. The Hero Splendor, Honda Activa, Honda Shine 125, Bajaj Platina 100, and TVS XL 100 are not simply two-wheelers, they are an integral part of India’s success story — carrying dreams, building bonds, and driving progress in every nook and corner of the nation. They took India forward, two-wheels at a time.
