When IO Interactive returned to the world of Hitman in 2016, it seemed like the long-running stealth series had run its course. At the time, the most recent entry was Hitman: Absolution, which was a competent but underwhelming follow-up to Hitman: Blood Money, launched a decade earlier, in 2006. Fortunately, the studio soon showed it had plenty of great ideas left to explore in future Hitman games, creating a new trilogy, now called World of Assassination, that stand as some of the finest examples of the stealth genre to date. And now, its most beloved mission is free to keep forever if you’re fast.
Hitman returned last decade with a trio of globe-trotting stealth game entries that refined the series’ grim, slapstick tone and clockwork world design to exceptional results. The base version of each game offers a wealth of maps to explore and creative assassination opportunities to discover, ranging from a neon-lit fashion show in Paris through to film sets in Mumbai and a murder mystery staged in an English manor.
The real standout among all of them, though, is Sapienza, a mission set in a fictional city meant to resemble those found along Italy’s Amalfi Coast. The layout of the map, which moves from narrow apartment buildings and cobblestone streets through to a luxurious villa and Bond-style secret underground laboratory, is filled with opportunities for Agent 47 to steal identities and orchestrate complex murders.
It’s worth noting that initial news of the free Sapienza level was presented confusingly enough that, at first, it seemed like the entire World of Assassination trilogy was currently available at no cost. If you’re looking to pick up the rest of the games and their DLC after spending time with Sapienza, read through the Steam page carefully. The purchasing options for various editions of the individual games and DLC bundles are weirdly convoluted.
Hitman: World of Assassination’s Sapienza pack is free on Steam until tomorrow, Friday May 30. Grab it before it’s gone by clicking right here.
