Manor Lords. Frostpunk. Against the Storm. Cities Skylines 2. When it comes to excellent city building games, we’re spoilt for choice. In fact, it’s so easy to lose countless hours to any of these games that it becomes incredibly difficult to finally put one down and move onto another. But if you’re looking for a fresh genre entry to keep you busy, I can’t recommend Citadelum enough. Adding a distinct Roman flavor to the strategy pot, Abylight Barcelona recently introduced a free 2.0 update, which has now been met with an all-new campaign you can run through at no extra cost. Best of all, the city builder itself is 50% off right now.
Citadelum starts like any other city building game, but quickly becomes so much more. In the beginning you’re collecting resources, constructing your settlement, and dealing with the minutiae of industrial logistics to ensure your people’s survival. Walls protect the population from barbarians, aqueducts and farms keep them alive, and soldiers populate your army.
From here, Citadelum takes on more of a global view. You can explore a gigantic map of the ancient world and expand your reach, laying down trade routes, bringing in exotic resources, and even finding mythological objects. Around now, however, you’ll start bumping into the Roman Pantheon – fickle gods who’ll do anything but be consistent. Maybe you’ll build a temple to Jupiter for some gifts, only to find that Neptune is smiting your people for that perceived slight.
If you dive into Citadelum today, you’ll also be met with the fourth campaign: Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars. A pivotal moment in Roman history, Caesar’s invasion of Gaul (modern day Western Europe) helped grow the reach of the Republic. That’s why the new update introduces the Autumn Forest biome, more challenging missions, and extra battle scenarios.
Due to the scale of Caesar’s Gallic invasion, logistics and cultural assimilation were equally as vital as military strategy to success. You’ll need to ensure roads steadily bring supplies to your legions, you economically integrate the people of Gaul, and you spread Rome’s reach as far as you can. With Citadelum’s 2.0 update already massively expanding the game, this campaign update makes it even better.
Abylight Barcelona has released the free Citadelum Gallic Wars campaign update on Steam now. You can buy the game at 50% off until Friday May 16, so expect to pay $12.49 / £10.49 until then. Just head here.
