An official announcement for the remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion feels imminent, as fans discover data on Bethesda’s website that hint at the project. It’s been an exciting week for The Elder Scrolls fans, as footage of the Oblivion remaster began to emerge across social media. The project was long rumored to be in development, backed by Microsoft’s court documents during the purchase of Activision Blizzard. It spoke of Bethesda’s work on The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a modern remake of the open world classic from 2006.
However, very little was known about the project, and many fans were skeptical that the remake would ever materialize. When screenshots of Oblivion Remastered leaked online, it shocked The Elder Scrolls community and the gaming world at large. Players saw a glimpse of a modern Cyrodiil for the very first time, seemingly confirming that the project was real.
As more and more details began to emerge about the project, a fan named Such-Ad5976 managed to dig up information about The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered via Google Tag Manager. Namely, it showed a reference to “oblivion-remastered” among Bethesda’s other titles, and curiously, the tag didn’t exist on April 10, 2025. These references have since been removed, but all signs point that they were recently added by Bethesda in anticipation of Oblivion Remastered. While no concrete release date has been given just yet, industry insiders such as Jeff Grubb state that the remake of The Elder Scrolls 4 will launch on the week of April 21, 2025.

While Bethesda Game Studios developed the original version of Oblivion, the remaster is supposedly being made by Virtuos. Rumors are that it will be shadow dropped by Bethesda for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S by the end of April 2025. According to previous leaks, the combat system in Oblivion Remastered will come with some major improvements, especially when it comes to dodging and archery. Furthermore, the user interface is rumored to have undergone an overhaul as well.
Oblivion Remastered is a unique opportunity for Bethesda. It has been nearly two decades since Oblivion launched, and Bethesda games have evolved dramatically since then. Given the mixed reception of Starfield at launch, Oblivion Remastered could give Bethesda valuable feedback on whether going back to its roots for The Elder Scrolls 6 will be worth it. Players should expect Oblivion Remastered to be announced soon, with the game likely set to come out on or shortly after April 21, 2025.
