Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have revealed that multiplayer spinoff Elden Ring Nightreign has already reached a major sales milestone less than 24 hours after its launch.
Per a post on X, Elden Ring Nightreign sales have topped two million, which is pretty impressive given that the game was released just a few hours ago. That is, of course, across all platforms on which Nightreign is available, including last-gen consoles.
Naturally, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco don’t provide a detailed breakdown of where people are buying the game, but the fact that Nightreign seems to be selling pretty well will no doubt come as a relief to the developer given that it’s FromSoftware’s first ever Souls-adjacent spinoff.
Despite Nightreign‘s success, players’ response to the game hasn’t been entirely positive. At time of writing, Nightreign is sitting at a “Mixed” Steam rating across just over 10,000 reviews.
Common criticisms include alterations to Elden Ring‘s base control scheme, as well as the lack of in-built voice communication and the inability to play the game as a duo. Right now, it’s only possible to play alone or in a squad of three players, although duos can matchmake with a random third player if they wish.
Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have already indicated that they’re intending to improve the solo experience, with Nightreign‘s next major patch aiming to add a once-per-night automatic revival and increased rune rewards for solo players.
Whether or not duos will be added to the game remains to be seen, but if calls for a duo mode continue as they are, I’d imagine FromSoftware and Bandai Namco will find them increasingly difficult to ignore.
If you’re not familiar with Elden Ring Nightreign, it’s a spinoff of the massively popular 2022 Soulslike action RPG Elden Ring (which is, for some godforsaken reason, also getting a movie adaptation).
The game takes many of Elden Ring‘s assets, as well as bosses and enemies from previous Souls games, and places them into a new multiplayer-focused gameplay loop inspired by Fortnite (yes, you read that right).
Players explore the procedurally-generated map by day, scavenging for weapons and resources, then take on powerful minibosses at night, with each run culminating in a battle against a larger unique boss.
You can check out Elden Ring Nightreign right now on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, and you can read my review of the game here to find out what I thought of it.
