Whatever happened to People Can Fly, developer of the gloriously over-the-top Bulletstorm? They’re working on Lost Rift, an all new game which traps you on an island and pits you against all manner of hostile fauna, other players, and even the elements themselves. And, right now, you can play it absolutely free.

Washing up on a strange beach is rarely a good thing, especially if you’re a whale. But for the protagonists of Lost Rift, an upcoming Steam Early Access title, it’s the start of a survival game nightmare.

Aside from fending off the local wildlife (and possibly more humanoid NPCs) you’ll have to craft your own shelter, gather resources, ride out nightmare-level weather, and more. And while it may be from the team behind Bulletstorm, there’s no super-convenient slow-mo and no surprise Duke Nukem cameo. So far.

The good news is you can team up with other players, in a team of up to five players. The bad news is that teams of other players can also murder you.

With a focus on realistic weaponry and extraction shooter mechanics, there are definite shades of Escape from Tarkov; it’s also a little reminiscent of The Forest and Sons of the Forest. And like the latter, it will have its own story to tell.

But is it any good? Hopefully it is, since People Can Fly has been working on this in secret for two years. There’s no concrete Steam Early Access release date but you can  you try it now thanks to a playtest which runs up until May 18.

Head over to Steam, go to Join the Lost Rift Playtest, click on Request Access and you should be good to go. While you’re having fun, People Can Fly will be using your experiences, and your feedback, to make Lost Rift a better game. And if “More Duke Nukem” is one of your suggestions, don’t let me stop you.
