Gearbox Software is bringing the Borderlands 4 release date forward, and it’s probably so the looter shooter can avoid GTA 6. Originally slated for the end of September, Borderlands 4 is now coming out a couple of weeks earlier on all platforms. So if you’re excited for the foul-mouthed FPS as much as I am, you’ll be squadding up with friends even earlier.
In a new Twitter/X video, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that the studio is bringing the Borderlands 4 release date forward. Instead of it being released on Tuesday September 23, the FPS game will now be available on Friday September 12.
Pitchford adds that Borderlands 4 also has a Sony State of Play presentation coming up soon, where we’ll get to see more of the game. The showcase is set for Wednesday April 30 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm BST / 11pm CEST.

As for why Gearbox has brought Borderlands 4’s launch forward, only one thing makes sense to me: Grand Theft Auto 6. My guess is that GTA 6 is launching sometime around the end of September or early October, and this forced Gearbox’s hand to make sure Borderlands 4 isn’t completely squashed in GTA’s wake.
We still don’t know exactly when Rockstar’s next game is coming out, but all information on the GTA 6 release date currently puts it at the tail end of 2025. Every major publisher with a videogame release set for the second half of the year will do whatever it can to avoid the new GTA, so I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Borderlands 4 is doing just that.
