Gearbox Entertainment has said a lot about how massive Borderlands 4 is, from calling it its “biggest universe” by far to touting the billions of guns and accessories. How much gameplay it will deliver remains to be seen, but from a development standpoint, it’s certainly been in the works for a long time.
In the latest Creator’s Voice video for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, chief creative officer Randy Parnell revealed that development began in 2019, immediately after Borderlands 3 shipped. Parnell said the team has spent six years working on “filling up Borderlands with great adventure.”
While that may be true, Borderlands 4 has allegedly faced development troubles. Last year, sources told Kotaku that Gearbox shelved “exciting new projects and IPs” to focus on the sequel and even seemingly reshuffled leadership to ensure its completion. With the sequel boasting more than twice the budget of Borderlands 3 and a potential $80 price tag, expectations for it to deliver are even higher.
Borderlands 4 launches on September 12th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
