It isn’t all that common for the launch of a DLC to be met with as much dismay as what’s surrounded Risk of Rain 2‘s Seekers of the Storm. Since it launched, the DLC has been a black mark on the roguelike, which was generally held alongside genre favorites like Vampire Survivors, Darkest Dungeon 2, or Hades 2. Its creator has continued to work hard on reworking Seekers of the Storm, though, with the most recent update to it serving as a massive relaunch of the DLC.
Seekers of the Storm came to Risk of Rain 2 after the roguelike game was acquired by Borderlands creator Gearbox. Its disastrous launch, which was plagued by technical and design issues so severe that the DLC still holds a ‘Mostly Negative’ all-time user rating on Steam, seemed like a bad omen at the time. Fortunately, though, the studio has continued to update Seekers of the Storm to the point that the DLC’s latest patch is dubbed a ‘2.0 Relaunch.’
The enormous new update centers on the game’s ‘Survivor’ characters after past patches addressed items and enemies. Each of the Survivors has been redesigned, with new skills added and base loadouts rebalanced for the Seeker, False Son, and Chef. The hope is that this work will make every one of these characters more viable while also providing new ways to build out individual Survivors.
In a Steam post detailing the update, Gearbox adds that it will continue improving the DLC and Risk of Rain 2 beyond this relaunch. The studio explains that it has “been working on an optimization update for the game’s system memory” but will also have more to share on upcoming plans in the near future.
