Back in 1987, Microprose put out Airborne Ranger, a military action game that included light strategy elements. In the decades that followed, its combination of tactics and direct combat were picked up and spun off into different strategy subgenres, resulting in everything from Firaxis’ XCOM games and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint to Insurgency: Sandstorm and Arma 3. Now, Microprose is returning with Airborne Ranger: Fightout, which reboots the original game with a new design framework that takes notes from the types of tactical shooters mentioned above.
As much a third-person shooter as it is a simulation game, Airborne Ranger: Fightout takes place on the battlefields of a near-future setting. It’s playable either alone or in co-op with up to four others and, as expected of a modern tactical action game, requires both careful mission planning and on-the-fly combat decisions.
There’s a narrative-focused single-player campaign to complete but also a multiplayer mode with co-op and deathmatch matches available. Regardless of the style of play, Airborne Ranger: Fightout emphasizes equipment and character customization, and features systems like a day and night cycle, vehicles to use, and environmental destruction that lets players alter their surroundings. If all of these elements come together well, it looks like Airborne Ranger might be one of the more compelling tactical shooters on the horizon.
Airborne Ranger: Fightout doesn’t have a launch date just yet, but you can find more information or add it to your wishlist by checking it out on Steam right here.
