Alstom to equip Taiwan Metro network with driverless signalling system TechTricks365

Alstom has secured a contract to deliver its cutting-edge driverless signalling system for the new Taichung Metro Blue Line in Taiwan, a project designed to support the city’s growing demand for urban mobility.

Awarded by the Systemwide E&M Project Office of Taiwan’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS), the contract includes the deployment of Alstom’s Urbalis CBTC (communications-based train control) system.

This technology enables fully automated, unattended train operations (UTO), increasing both the safety and efficiency of the metro service while allowing for shorter headways and improved capacity.

The Blue Line will span approximately 26.7 kilometers with 18 stations, running from Taichung Port through key city districts to the Beitun area.

The system is expected to significantly reduce congestion and travel time across Taiwan’s second most populous city.

Alstom’s Urbalis system is already in use on over 160 metro lines across the globe and is recognized for its reliability and scalability.

The Taichung project marks another step in Alstom’s long-standing commitment to Taiwan’s rail infrastructure development.

The company previously supplied signalling systems for the Wenhu and Circular Lines in Taipei, as well as the Taichung Green Line.

“Alstom is proud to support the development of smart and sustainable mobility in Taiwan,” said Jean-François Beaudoin, President of Alstom Asia-Pacific.

“Our CBTC technology is designed to meet the evolving needs of high-density urban environments, enabling more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.”

The Blue Line is scheduled for phased completion beginning in the early 2030s, with construction and systems integration to be carried out in close coordination with local and international partners.
